Can a general dentist do surgical extractions after a course?
Yes, within their competence and with appropriate indemnity. Oral surgery courses are designed to extend what a general dentist can safely do and to sharpen the decision on when to refer to a specialist oral surgeon.
Are oral surgery courses verifiable CPD?
Under the GDC Enhanced CPD scheme dentists need 100 hours of verifiable CPD in each five-year cycle, with at least 10 hours in any two consecutive years. Check that the provider issues a certificate that states the hours, the learning outcomes and the GDC development outcomes it maps to.
What is the difference between an oral surgery masterclass and a diploma?
A masterclass is usually one or two days on a specific skill such as suturing or wisdom teeth. Diplomas and postgraduate certificates run over a year with assessed cases and a formal qualification.
